Voorman Ed De Smul (zang, gitaar en mondharmonica) en Tom De Poorter (gitaar, lapsteel en mandoline) hebben de krachten gebundeld met een rotsvaste ritmesectie (Wim Ramon op contrabas en Johan Guidee op drums) om een nog krachtiger geluid neer te zetten.De wenende lapsteel en ronkende harmonica worden nu aangevuld met een groove die stilzitten onmogelijk maakt. Howlin' Roaddogs
Howlin' Roaddogs brengen een mix van eigen werk en eigenzinnige covers. Goed voor twee uur rock, blues en americana.
In 2022, founding members Björn Van Gompel and Ed revived the band Howlin' Roaddogs, joined by Jan Baert on guitar and Peter Claeys on drums. As of October 2025, the drumsticks have been passed on to Gino Claeys.Howlin' Roaddogs deliver a mix of original material and distinctive covers, providing two hours of rock, blues, and Americana.

Silke en Ed
Silke ft The Rusty Zippers
Ook met zijn dochter Silke Catteeuw - De Smul treedt Ed op.
Ze brengen een programma waarin ze allebei vooral eigen nummers brengen. Ze bespelen tal van (soms verrassende) instrumenten.
Silke is een creatieve duizendpoot en is ook beeldend kunstenaar, schrijver en illustrator . Ze brengt vooral eigen werk, muzikaal ondersteund door The Rusty Zippers.
Zelf speelt Silke ook gitaar, lepels, en accordeon.
Ed also performs with his daughter, Silke Catteeuw - De Smul.Together, they present a program featuring primarily their own original songs, played on a wide (and sometimes surprising) range of instruments.
Silke is a true creative powerhouse—not only a musician but also a visual artist, writer, and illustrator. She mainly performs her own work, musically backed by The Rusty Zippers. Silke herself plays guitar, spoons, and accordion.

Vorige projecten
Ed startte in 1989 samen met dorpsgenoot Philippe Beauprez de groep Wizzard.
In 1993 werd hij bassist bij Lipstick Traces, een rockgroep die tourde in binnen- en buitenland. Later groeide hij door tot zanger en mondharmonicaspeler. Lipstick Traces speelde op verschillende festivals en maakte cd's met o.a. Kloot PerW en Willy Willy als producers.
Medio jaren 2000 begint Ed aan een nieuw project: de Howlin' Roaddogs met Blues, folk en heel wat eigen nummers op het programma.
Zijn passie voor de blues uitte hij in de stomende bluesbands : de Hot Burrito Blues Band, Ed and The Hot Burrito's en 10 jaar bij Ed and the Gators. Ed verdiende zijn pluimen als verdienstelijk Blues zanger, blues harpspeler en gitarist. Ed and the Gators won in 2017 The Belgian Blues Challenge en vertegenwoordigde België in 2018 The European Blues Challenge in Hell, Noorwegen.
Na vele jaren zijn liederen in verschillende bands te brengen, werd de drang groot om terug te gaan tot de basis, de essentie van zijn nummers. Met de Ed De Smul Band maakte hij een cd met enkel eigen werk. Deze CD werd opgedragen aan zijn vader, Daniël De Smul.
Belgium - Texas connectie
In 2011 kwam Wendy Colonna naar België om te touren met Belgische muzikanten (The Lazy Bones), waaronder Ed en ook Rusty Zipper Tom De Poorter . De samenwerking was zo intens dat een opname zich opdrong. De CD 'Barefoot in Belgium' van Wendy Colonna and the Lazy Bones werd nog op diezelfde tour ingeblikt.
Later in 2011 kwamen James Hinkle en Chad Pope naar de Belgische zalen, onder de naam Daddie's Juju. Ed was gastmuzikant voor de Belgische tour. Ook deze mooie samenwerking mondde uit in een opname : Daddie's Juju – 'The Belgian Sessions' met Ed op harmonica.
Het klikte goed tussen Ed en James en een jarenlange samenwerking werd gesmeed. Onder de naam James Hinkle en The Transatlantics tourden 2 Amerikanen (James Hinkle en Lucas White) en 2 Belgen (Ed De Smul en Stefan Boret) verschillende jaren afwisselend aan deze of gene zijde van de oceaan.
Past Projects
Ed's musical journey began in 1989 when he co-founded the group Wizzard with fellow villager Philippe Beauprez.In 1993, he became the bassist for Lipstick Traces, a rock band that toured both domestically and abroad. He eventually evolved into the band's lead singer and harmonica player. Lipstick Traces performed at various festivals and produced CDs with renowned producers such as Kloot PerW and Willy Willy.
In the mid-2000s, Ed launched a new project: Howlin' Roaddogs, featuring a repertoire of blues, folk, and many original compositions.
He channeled his passion for the blues through several high-energy bands: the Hot Burrito Blues Band, Ed and The Hot Burritos, and a ten-year tenure with Ed and the Gators. Ed earned his reputation as a skilled blues vocalist, harmonica player, and guitarist. In 2017, Ed and the Gators won the Belgian Blues Challenge and represented Belgium at the European Blues Challenge in Hell, Norway.
In 2018, after years of performing his songs with various bands, Ed felt a strong urge to return to the basics—the essence of his songwriting. With the Ed De Smul Band, he recorded a CD consisting entirely of original work, dedicated to his father, Daniël De Smul.
The Belgium-Texas Connection
In 2011, Wendy Colonna traveled to Belgium to tour with Belgian musicians (The Lazy Bones), including Ed and fellow Rusty Zipper Tom De Poorter. The collaboration was so intense that a recording became inevitable. The album Barefoot in Belgium by Wendy Colonna and the Lazy Bones was recorded during that very tour.
Later in 2011, James Hinkle and Chad Pope toured Belgian venues under the name Daddie's Juju. Ed joined the Belgian tour as a guest musician. This successful collaboration also resulted in a recording: Daddie's Juju – The Belgian Sessions, featuring Ed on harmonica.Ed and James hit it off immediately, sparking a long-term partnership.
Under the name James Hinkle and The Transatlantics, two Americans (James Hinkle and Lucas White) and two Belgians (Ed De Smul and Stefan Boret) toured for several years, alternating between both sides of the Atlantic.
